Cooking With A Solar Oven
Climate change is one of the biggest concerns among the government, politicians as well as the common people in
today’s world. Most often we are made to believe that Green house effect is the single deadly cause for the change
in climate. The carbon footprint that we cause by the use of fossil fuels leads to the Green house effect and are
causing the climate to change for worse.
Genuinely speaking the relationship of the earth with the sun is the root cause of the climate change. The sun
spots, solar flares and the variation in the rotation of the earth in it’s orbit around the sun all are causing the
climate on the earth to change. Unfortunately this cause is not supported by most the people in power because of
their vested interest of making money.
There is a continuous effort by the media to make the general public aware about their role in the process of
the climate change. They are made to believe that their lifestyle is to be blamed for the change in climate and the
responsibility of rectifying also lies with them. Whatever the cause may be, it is always worth to be Carbon
neutral.–i.e., to reduce the carbon emission to the environment and thereby reducing the green house effect.
According to the New Oxford American Dictionary to consider ourselves carbon neutral we need to calculate the
total carbon that we are emitting in the atmosphere and then reduce it to the minimum. In spite of that it is not
possible to ensure zero emission. So one needs to balance that by planting new trees or switching to Green
technologies such as Solar or wind energy.
The first option of planting new trees to balance the emission is rather unpractical. In the modern homes when
we are living in a jungle of concrete, how do we balance the cutting and planting trees? This may be an effective
way of saving ourselves from the environmental cops when we are caught polluting the climate, by showing him that
we are doing our bit to keep the earth green but it can hardly reduce the carbon emission into the climate.
But in practice planting a few trees is not going to provide us a true solution of the problem. Prevention is
always better than cure. What we should try and do is that stop polluting the climate rather than trying to balance
the damage. Hence, while we should do our bit to protect the green cover and plant more and more trees, the second
option of shifting to Green technologies is the true solution for the problem of Greenhouse effect.
This should start from the very basic activities of our life like cooking our food. In our everyday cooking,
whether we are cooking, baking or boiling the food, we are either using electricity or some fossil fuel to get our
job done. While using fossil fuel releases carbon into the atmosphere cooking in electric ovens consumes huge
amount of electricity.
For example cooking 3 pounds of chicken will take about one and half hour of time and will consume about 5110
watts of electricity. Also, while cooking indoors, especially during summer the temperature inside the house
increases considerably, and to cool it down we consume more and more electricity. Thus a lot of energy is lost is
wasted.
Using a solar oven for our cooking will take nearly the same time as that taken by an electrical oven in cooking
the same 3 pounds of chicken but with no cost for the fuel , because the sun light comes absolutely free ! It will
also eliminate the carbon footprint as we are using no fossil fuel.
And imagine the fun of cooking in a solar oven in a kitchen in your very own vegetable garden at the backyard of
your home! This will also give you an image of being environmentally responsible.
